Birmingham Wheels, 17th April 2010

This was the first appearance of the season for Team Fairhurst with 217 Lee, behind the wheel again. With the recently rebuilt engine in the car, tonight would be more about running in the engine and checking everything was working ok. Tonight the team was also holding a party for Adam's 5th birthday and he was enjoying his night sat in the 217 car in the pits, wearing Lee's balaclava, covered with grease and pretending to drive the car.

Heat 1

Lee got stuck in from the off after starting in 17th place in a 23 car grid, and was having a few tussles with the pack of star drivers and was holding his own. By lap 4 Lee had moved into 13th place, but on lap 5 Andy Smith on a charge to the front, put the bumper in on Lee going into turn 1, the 217 car jumped out of gear and headed towards the armco. The impact resulted in damage to the right front corner of the bumper and cow catcher and Lee lost time as a result. The damage would require a temporary repair to fix the damage before the next heat. The 217 car got going again but Lee finished the race in 18th place and the last car on the lead lap.

Result – 141, 11, 1, 464, 85, 37, 4, 321, 16, 302

......................................................................................................Heat 3

The 217 car lined up in 15th place on the grid for heat 3. By the end of lap 1 Lee was up into 9th place but then his position yo-yoed for the next few laps as he battled with Paul Hines, Tony Smith, Stuart Smith, Matt Newson and Lee Dimmick. From lap 6 to lap 9 Lee held onto 11th position but then pulled off onto the centre and into retirement after noticing that the differential was starting to make a bad whining noise.

Result – 141, 259, 4, 390, 16, 85, 84, 2, 53, 12

After the race, the team worked hard to strip and repair the damaged diff, and with the car ready to race again, Lee headed down from the pits to the track for the Grand National, only to find the pits gate already closed, so sadly that was the end of the night for the Fairhurst team.

Hednesford Hills Raceway - Sunday 18th April 2010

The format for Hednesford would be 2 heats with all cars in each heat, with everyone into the final. This would be Lee's first time in an F1 around Brisca's fastest track, having experienced it before in his F2.

......................................................................................................Heat 1

Lee lined up for heat 1 on the front row of the reds alongside Michael Scriven, with Scott Davids and Danny Wainman lined up behind. The race started badly for Lee when he couldn't find the race gear on the start and got barged onto the infield as a result and drove into the kerb. Lee lost over a lap regaining the track and ran the wholr race at the back of the pack, finishing in 15th place and 2 laps down. The race was won by Andy Smith with Luke Davidson 2nd and Neil Scriven 3rd.

Result - 1, 464, 11, 84, 2, 153, 8, 515, 97, 53

......................................................................................................Heat 2

The 217 car was lined up in 15th place alongside Scott Davids and things went to plan through this race with Lee running well with the other red tops. By lap 6, Lee was up to 11th place running behind Frankie Wainman and Tom Harris. On lap 10 Lee moved up a place to 10th, which he held until the finish with 515 in front in 9th and 212 behind in 11th place. The race was won by Dan Johnson in his new Peter Falding built tar car, Mick Harris was 2nd and Neil Scriven came come 3rd.

Result - 4, 8, 11, 464, 459, 2, 84, 462, 515, 217

.......................................................................................................Final

Lee shared the front row of the reds with 2008 European Champion Dan Johnson. For the first 7 laps, Lee held positions between 13th and 15th in the race, mixing it with Scriven, Andy Smith and Paul Harrison. Laps 8 to 16 saw Lee and Danny Wainman having a good battle for the 14th spot with Danny finally taking advantage on lap 17 to move ahead of Matt Newson and into 13th, leaving Lee down in 15th place which he held to the flag.

At the front, Luke Davidson made up for the last bend attack from Andy Smith the night before at Birmingham which had denied him the final win. This time Luke held onto his lead and claimed the win with James Lund in 2nd and Dan Johnson in 3rd.

Result - 464, 153, 4, 11, 1, 84, 2, 97, 515, 459

................................................................................................Grand National

Starting 6th Lee had another close fought race, this time battling it out with John Lund, Tom Harris and Scott Davids. Early in the race, Frankie Wainman put the bumper in on Lee, pushing the 217 car into the back of Tom Harris. Tom retaliated on the next lap and put Lee out wide in the corner. With 2 laps to go, Lee was in 11th place behind Scott Davids, but Lee got the bumper in on the last bend and moved the 462 car out wide to claim 10th place at the flag.

Result - 11, 153, 4, 515, 459, 1, 12, 16, 2, 217

Skegness Stadium - Saturday 8th May 2010, Mo Jones Trophy.

Tonight marked the 1 year anniversary of Lee's proper Formula 1 debut, where Lee won heat and final to claim the Mo Jones memorial trophy, some 12 months ago. So tonight Lee would be attempting to retain the trophy, but this time it would be a much bigger task running from star grade rather than white.

Since Hednesford, the team had made a few alterations to the car in an attempt to improve handling. They had removed some unnecessary outside ballast weight from the chassis and made some changes to the inside suspension mounting points, so hopefully the car would handle and perform better this weekend.

.............................................................................Heat 1

Heat 1 saw 15 cars lined up, with Lee on the outside of the front row of red tops alongside 459 Lee Dimmick. The early laps were fast and frantic with 37 Chris Cowley taking an early lead on lap 2. Andy Smith was on a mission, driving up the inside on the kerbs and forcing his way through the pack to take the lead on lap 11. Andy set a new Skegness track record in the process and held the lead unchallenged to take the win.

Lee had a good battle with Lee Dimmick and H007 Dave Schaap and he brought the 217 car home in 7th place to qualify for the Mo Jones Trophy Final.

Result - 1, 4, 84, 37, 459, 462, 217, 97, 41, 398

......................................................Mo Jones Memorial Trophy Final

32 cars lined up for the final with National Hot Rod driver 385 Steve Thompson on the front row, followed by 4 yellow tops, 8 red tops and the rest of the grid were star grade drivers. The 217 car was gridded on the second row of red tops behind Luke Davidson and Lee Dimmick. By the end of lap 1, Lee had moved from his 16th starting spot and was running in 10th place. By lap 3 he was running in 8th place and improved that to 6th place on lap 6. Starting 7th Scott Davids had also driven a blinder and had moved into the lead on lap 5. On lap 7, Lee made a big push and moved up into 2nd place after passing drivers including Murray Harrison, Spencer Taylor and Luke Davidson. With only one place left to go for, Lee set about trying to catch Scott Davids at the front, but he had a sizeable lead. Lee tried his hardest but Scott was driving a perfect race and sadly Lee fell just short of catching Scott by the flag on lap 20. Another lap though and it might have been another story as Lee entered turn 3 on the final lap only a whisker away from putting in a hit on Scott's back bumper. Andy Smith was also within striking distance of Lee as well, so if there had been another lap, the result may have been totally different, so perhaps a second place finish on the podium was not a bad result in the end. It had been a stunning and mature drive from Lee and he never put a foot wrong during the race.

Scott Davids took the Mo Jones Trophy and he was clearly delighted with the win, Lee finished a close 2nd with Andy Smith a close 3rd place.

Result - 462, 217, 1, 515, 2, 464, 97, 259, H247, 321

..................................................................Grand National

The final had been run in damp conditions which suited Lee, but it was bone dry again for the Grand National. Starting in 16th place, Lee got the 217 car as high as 7th place on lap 5, but then he started to struggle as the tyres and set up went away from him as the race wound down in the latter stages. Lee brought the car home in 14th out of the 24 finishers.

Andy Smith took the win ahead of 22 Will Yarrow with 153 James Lund in 3rd.

Result – 1, 22, 153, 172, 515, 37, 2, 16, 4, 321
